The Substance Use Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program at WJCS meets people where they are in their substance use and helps them become stable in early recovery, all in an outpatient setting. Addictions to all substances are treated, including marijuana, opioids, alcohol, nicotine, sedatives, cocaine, methamphetamine, and hallucinogens. The program also services individuals with related co-occurring mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.

The Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program is a six-week program. Individuals enrolled in the program come in person to attend group therapy sessions led by licensed clinicians 3 days per week for 3 hours each day. Admissions occur on a rolling basis so people may start as soon as they are ready.

During the Intensive Outpatient Program, the first two groups of each day are didactic. These groups emphasize evidence-based treatments for addiction including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Harm Reduction, and Twelve-Step Facilitation. In addition, these groups provide education about addiction and teach effective relapse prevention skills, including coping with urges and cravings.

The third and last group of each day is a Process Group during which participants discuss what stood out for them from groups that day, their feelings, and anything else on their minds related to recovery.

Outpatient Detoxification

Prior to starting groups, outpatient detoxification from alcohol, opioids, and other substances is offered through the program, when necessary. This service helps ensure a smooth and safe transition into recovery, along with preparing those who complete it, to make the most out of groups before starting them.

While receiving outpatient detoxification, individuals meet with our psychiatric staff to manage and monitor the safe resolution of withdrawal symptoms. These appointments may be in person or virtual, as recommended by staff, and occur as often as necessary, up to daily, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. If at any time more support is needed to safely complete detoxification, individuals are referred to local hospitals.

Treatment Approach

In addition to attending groups, everyone enrolled in the Intensive Outpatient Program receives weekly individual therapy and psychiatric appointments, as needed. Both these individual appointments may be virtual or in person, as recommended by staff. Family therapy sessions are also available.

During psychiatric appointments, medications may be started or continued which significantly reduce the risk of relapse. These medications include buprenorphine (Suboxone) and extended-release naltrexone (Vivitrol).

Everyone enrolled in the Intensive Outpatient Program receives urine drug screening and breathalyzer testing twice per week and at other times, when necessary. These tests are administered by the nurse for the program in person on two days when participants come for groups.

Prior to discharge, our staff assist individuals in developing comprehensive aftercare plans to help support their continued success in recovery. These plans typically include arranging appointments with psychiatrists and therapists to continue treatment. Referrals to higher levels of care are also made when necessary.
