Wiener Academy for Young Women
WJCS’ Wiener Academy for Young Women at the Mary J. Blige Center for Women in Yonkers mission is to inspire and prepare girls in grades 4-8 to reach their full potential through academic support and activities designed to build character, enhance social development, and promote health and wellness. Our vision is to inspire young girls to develop into knowledgeable, confident, ambitious women prepared to courageously navigate through any challenges and to prepare them to become exemplary citizens in their community and in the world.
Currently, due to COVID and the Yonkers School District remote or hybrid academic schedule, the program has pivoted to a hybrid model where the young women meet in-person at MJB in small cohorts of five for 2 hours per week and then receive 2-4 hours of additional virtual programming the remainder of the week. Continuing to serve girls in grades 4–8, we are able to accommodate up to 30 participants (6 cohorts of 5) for the 2020-2021 academic school year.
Programming continues to address the academic and social-emotional wellness of participants. Activities include homework help and support, individual and/or group tutoring, a skill based social/emotional wellness group, computer skills, and a variety of enrichment activities such as: art, music, sports (yoga, dance), holiday celebrations, journaling, and book discussion groups.
Additionally, the program offers a fun-filled, six-week summer learning program that provides educational and enrichment activities and trips designed to help girls explore their academic interests and stay stimulated and engaged during the summer.
WJCS also partners with other community agencies to infuse evidence-based models into after-school programming, including the Domestic Violence Education and Prevention Program of My Sisters’ Place offering its REAL program (Relationships, Empowerment and Leadership) to help girls understand the components of healthy friendships and relationships.
