Wiener Academy for Young Women
To enhance girls’ academic and personal development, WJCS has launched the Wiener Academy for Young Women at the Mary J. Blige Center for Women at WJCS in Yonkers. The mission of the Wiener Academy is to inspire and prepare girls in grades 4-8 to reach their full potential through academic support and activities designed to build character, enhance social development, and promote health and wellness. Our vision is to inspire young girls to develop into knowledgeable, confident, ambitious women prepared to courageously navigate through any challenges and to prepare them to become exemplary citizens in their community and in the world.
The program consists of three components: an after-school program from 3:00 - 6:00 pm during schools days, including one hour of homework and academic help and two hours of enrichment and character-building activities; a workshop series in local schools that focuses on girls’ leadership, empowerment and wellness, and a fun-filled, six-week summer learning program that provides educational activities and trips designed to help girls explore their academic interests and stay stimulated and engaged during the summer.
WJCS also partners with other community agencies to infuse evidence-based models into after-school programming, including Planned Parenthood’s delivery of the “Making Proud Choices” curriculum. In addition, the Domestic Violence Education and Prevention Program (DVEP) of My Sisters’ Place offers its REAL program (Relationships, Empowerment and Leadership) to help girls understand the components of healthy friendships and relationships.
