Description:
This training is designed for physicians and nurse practitioners (and other members of clinical teams offering SUD treatment) seeking practical guidance on initiating and maintaining patients on medications for alcohol, stimulant, cannabis, opioids, and nicotine use disorders. Participants will receive an overview of FDA-approved, off-label, and emerging medication treatments for these substances of misuse as well as guidance on how to select between various oral and injectable medication options. The course will emphasize and explore medication initiation approaches, and how to effectively engage individuals who may be ambivalent about treatment. Strategies for incorporating medications into incremental progress models and patient-centered care plans will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify current FDA-approved and evidence-based pharmacologic treatments for alcohol, opioid, nicotine, stimulant, and cannabis use disorders.
  • Understand decision making for selection of the best medication (e.g., oral, injectable) option for substance-involved individuals.
  • Understand the principles and application of medication initiation to reduce barriers to care.
  • Discuss strategies for encouraging treatment engagement among individuals with substance use disorders, including motivational approaches.
  • Evaluate considerations for prescribing in the context of co-occurring mental and physical health conditions.
