by Nicholas Primavera, Coordinator of WJCS Shelanu & Supper Club Program

This week, I had the opportunity to interview some of our members about the word “bullying” and how Shelanu has helped them grow.

One member shared that before joining Shelanu, they were bullied and struggled with confidence. Since becoming part of the program, they have built friendships, worked toward goals, and even achieved impressive degrees.

Another member explained that one of the best ways to handle bullying was to block out negativity and not engage with hurtful comments. Choosing peace over conflict helped them move forward.

One inspiring story came from a member who was bullied for being bald and was often called “Mr. Clean.” Through the support, friendships, and acceptance found at Shelanu, those hurtful moments no longer define him. Today, he carries himself with confidence and pride.

Another member shared that Shelanu helped them feel accepted, included, and more comfortable meeting new people. What once felt impossible now feels achievable because they know they are not alone.

These conversations were a powerful reminder that Shelanu is more than a program, it is a community where people are supported, encouraged, and empowered to be themselves.

If I can share something personal, I have always been very self conscious about how I look. When I recently presented at a conference, I was told that people were printing out the meme and placing it on their desks. For me, that was a major milestone in confidence and self acceptance.

Sometimes the words that once hurt us become the very thing that inspires others.

Stay strong. You got this.
