The overwhelming majority of these deaths are due to opioids. This session will give an overview of opioids\, including their various types and main intoxication symptoms. Important trends in opioid addiction will be reviewed\, including the rise of synthetic opioids\, such as fentanyl. The presentation will then cover important\noverdose risk factors and signs to recognize along with how to treat opioid overdose with naloxone. In addition\, medication assisted treatments for opioid use disorder will be discussed in detail. These treatments include methadone\, buprenorphine\, and extended-release naltrexone. Finally\, how to differentiate and treat psychiatric symptoms that occur with opioid use disorder will be discussed. DESCRIPTION:Dates: 4/30/24 & 5/7/24\nTime: 9:00 – 10:30\nContact Hrs: 3\nCEUs: 3\nIt has been determined that WJCS staff would benefit from access to a general training specific to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The cognitive behavioral paradigm provides a unique way to conceptualize pathology and to plan therapeutic intervention. The majority of clinicians practicing today identify that some part of their work is informed by CBT. Research consistently indicates the efficacy of CBT with many psychological disorders and with a diverse range of clients. CBT is often embedded in frequently used\ninterventions at WJCS such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT). Being better able to recognize and identify CBT-specific techniques has the potential to deepen a clinician’s\nunderstanding of the interventions he/she/they utilize in treatment. In addition\, mastery of the CBT model empowers a clinician to purposefully target common challenges for which research has demonstrated efficacy\n(such as anxiety and depression). To date\, 38 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medical use while recreational use has been legalized in 24 states along with the District of Columbia. In this evolving legal landscape\, marijuana use has become increasingly prevalent\, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Nine percent of adult and seventeen percent of adolescent marijuana users become addicted to it. In this context\, health care providers are on the front-lines caring for a growing number of people who use marijuana and an ever-expanding list of associated products. Understanding the effects of marijuana on both physical and mental health are critical to caring for growing number of people using it.   \n This session will provide an update on the current legalization status of marijuana along with reviewing the major products related to it used both medically and recreationally today. In addition\, the main compounds of clinical interest in marijuana will be discussed along with their intoxication effects\, physical signs\, withdrawal symptoms\, and long-term adverse effects. Pregnancy risks\, medical uses\, and urine drug screening for marijuana will also all be included in the session. Finally\, the presentation will conclude by reviewing treatment interventions for people addicted to marijuana along with protective factors from developing addiction. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 21\, 12pm via Zoom\nEnrollment Limited To: No Limit\nContact Hrs: 1                     CEUs: 1\nSpeaker: Dan Dulberger\, RMFT-SM\nNon-Violent Resistance Therapy (NVR) is an approach that helps parents to manage the violent\, destructive\, and/or controlling behavior of their children. NVR encourages parents to make a stand against violent or destructive behavior from their child\, without using physical or verbal aggression. \n\nIt is a stable alternative to violent conflict and unproductive attempts at verbal persuasion.\nNVR is used for a variety of aggressive people\, including children\, adolescents\, and adults.\nIt is currently used with children in care\, children with mental health issues\, and people with autistic spectrum disorder.\n\nIn mental health\, NVR signifies the therapeutic application of political non-violent resistance principles to crises of human caregiving\, as originally articulated by Haim Omer. \nNVR as a therapeutic approach was developed by clinical psychologist Haim Omer and a group of his students at the Tel Aviv University’s Department of Psychology in the mid-90’s. It started out as a counselling project to parents suffering from loss of parental authority\, facing disruptive behaviors in children. This work brought NVR’s very first implementation – a new philosophy of parenting called “New Authority.” \nNVR is widely practiced and taught in Europe and in Israel. Professional associations and networks devoted to NVR exist in the UK\, the Netherlands\, Belgium\, Germany\, Austria and Switzerland. Since 2010\, the global NVR community has held six international conferences devoted to innovation in NVR theory and practice. Since 2021\, NVR is making its first steps in Canada and in the United States. \nNVR uses many tools to achieve non-harming resistance to harm\, but in itself is not a tool\, or even a toolbox\, but a philosophy and a value system of care. \n  \nDan is founder and director of the Center for NVR Therapy and Practice. A systemic therapist\, a counseling therapist\, and a counselor in NVR interventions\, Dan is internationally acknowledged as an instructor and innovator in Non-Violent Resistance Therapy\, as well as in NVR interventions with families of non-emerging adult children with entrenched dependence. His professional activities include clinical work with families in crises\, consulting to mental health organizations\, training\, supervision\, authoring\, teaching\, and speaking\, in Canada\, Europe\, and Israel. Dan teaches and supervises at the University of Calgary’s Post-Masters Certificate and Diploma in Couple and Family Therapy and is formerly a staff member of the Calgary Family Therapy Center. In 2010\, Dan founded the Israeli Clinic for Parental Empowerment\, together with Haim Omer. Dan holds an M.A. degree in Psychology from Tel Aviv University\, is a graduate of SHINUI (the Israeli Institute for Systemic Studies\, Family and Personal Change)\, and was personally trained by Haim Omer in the NVR approach. Dan is certified by the Israeli (CCFT)\, Canadian (CAMFT) and American (AAMFT) Associations for Marital and Family Therapy\, and by the Association of Counseling Therapists of Alberta (ACTA). DESCRIPTION:Date: 03/08/2024\nTime: 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM\nEnrollment Limited To: No Limit\nContact Hrs: 1.5                       CEUs: 1.5\nThis 1.5-hour training will introduce attendees to the concept of co-occurring disorders- the co-occurrence of one or more mental health and substance use disorders that often act in synergistic ways to exacerbate one another leading to more negative outcomes than if individuals had a substance use or mental health disorder alone. This overview will review the developmental onset and course of co-occurring disorders as well as providing an overview of the research on the pharmacological treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
