Examples include bath salts\, kratom\, kava\, Phenethylamines\, and more. These substances often do not come with recommended dosage or known ingredients due to inconsistent manufacturing and constantly changing composition\, making it difficult to know their impacts or risks. Understanding as much as we can about these substances\, including their impact on physical and mental health\, is critical to workforces working with individuals who are consuming these substances or may be at risk for consuming these substances. This session will provide an overview of these various substances comprising this category of drugs\, their intoxication and withdrawal symptoms\, and co-occurring mental health and physical health concerns. This may be apparent at intake or emerge during treatment. Symptoms of one disorder are often mistaken for the other. Treatment of individuals who present with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues can present a myriad of challenges for providers. Among the challenges faced by providers treating individuals with co-occurring conditions are: \n\nrecognizing substance use when it is present\ncompleting appropriate assessment of a client’s substance use\nhelping clients recognize the problematic nature of their use for\nthe overall wellbeing\ndetermining what level of care is appropriate for the client\nselecting appropriate interventions to decrease substance use\nhelping clients reduce their risk for slips and relapses in their substance use and cope effectively with them when they occur.\n\nThis training will help providers to be more prepared for the challenges associated with providing treatment to such individuals. Examples of hallucinogens include LSD\, peyote\, psilocybin\, PCP\, ketamine\, salvia\, and more\, some of which people associate with spiritual experiences and others people associate with having potential therapeutic value. The impacts of hallucinogen use is as varied as the number of substances making us this broad category of substance\, and so understanding the effects of hallucinogens on both physical and mental health is critical to workforces working with individuals and families impacted by hallucinogen use. \nThis session will provide an overview of various substances comprising the category of hallucinogens\, their intoxication and withdrawal symptoms\, and co-occurring mental health and physical health concerns. The session will also address the state of any known therapeutic benefit of these substances and legal status. In addition\, vaping continues to grow in popularity and is the most common delivery method of nicotine among teenagers and young adults. Nicotine is the main addictive chemical in both smoking cigarettes and vaping. This session will review the mechanism of action\, addictive potential\, metabolites\, and withdrawal symptoms of nicotine. Medications to help people quit using nicotine products will also be reviewed in detail\, including discussion of their efficacy and how to take them. Finally\, special issues with nicotine use\, including co-occurring psychiatric disorders and medical complications will be discussed. Time for questions will be available after the presentation. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the mechanism of action of nicotine through which it causes addiction. The overwhelming majority of these deaths are due to opioids. This session will give an overview of opioids\, including their various types and main intoxication symptoms. Important trends in opioid addiction will be reviewed\, including the rise of synthetic opioids\, such as fentanyl. The presentation will then cover important\noverdose risk factors and signs to recognize along with how to treat opioid overdose with naloxone. In addition\, medication assisted treatments for opioid use disorder will be discussed in detail. These treatments include methadone\, buprenorphine\, and extended-release naltrexone. Finally\, how to differentiate and treat psychiatric symptoms that occur with opioid use disorder will be discussed. SUMMARY:The ABC's of CBT
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 4/30/24 & 5/7/24\nTime: 9:00 – 10:30\nContact Hrs: 3\nCEUs: 3\nIt has been determined that WJCS staff would benefit from access to a general training specific to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The cognitive behavioral paradigm provides a unique way to conceptualize pathology and to plan therapeutic intervention. The majority of clinicians practicing today identify that some part of their work is informed by CBT. Research consistently indicates the efficacy of CBT with many psychological disorders and with a diverse range of clients. CBT is often embedded in frequently used\ninterventions at WJCS such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT). Being better able to recognize and identify CBT-specific techniques has the potential to deepen a clinician’s\nunderstanding of the interventions he/she/they utilize in treatment. In addition\, mastery of the CBT model empowers a clinician to purposefully target common challenges for which research has demonstrated efficacy\n(such as anxiety and depression). The course will outline the historical foundations of CBT\, provide an overview of CBT theory and core techniques\, and incorporate opportunities for application of theoretical concepts via case studies and analysis of CBT demonstrations. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion\, and video clips \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will be able to identify the theoretical foundations of the cognitive behavioral paradigm.\nParticipants will be able to explain how the cognitive behavioral model conceptualizes pathology across a wide range of disorders.\nParticipants will be able to give several examples of therapeutic interventions that are indicative of the cognitive behavioral model of psychotherapy.\nWhen provided with case study material\, either via video or in written form\, participants will be able to identify what characterizes the work as being unique to cognitive behavioral psychotherapy.\nParticipants will be able to provide an example of an intervention that they have implemented or are planning on implementing that is congruent with the essence of the cognitive behavioral paradigm.\n\nCost: $150\nInstructor: Kenn Mann\, Psy.D. / Natasha Kostek\, Psy.D.\nLocation: Live via Zoom \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067. \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. Partial credit will not be awarded to those who attend only a portion of the class. Therefore\, late arrival or an early departure of greater than 10 minutes constitutes not attending a class in its entirety. To document attendance\, participants must sign in and out of the class and complete an evaluation at the end of each class. \nThis form is currently closed for submissions.
