SUMMARY:Family Volunteer Event: Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, January 19\, 2026\, in celebration of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, WJCS is hosting a Family Volunteer Event. We are inviting families with children of all ages to participate in collecting nonperishable food items and packing “Winter Hug” care packages with soup\, cocoa\, hats\, and mittens for the Westchester community.  This is a great opportunity for families to bond and teach children the values of volunteerism and helping others. \nOur Westchester families need our help now more than ever. With the rising cost of EVERYTHING and the reduction in support and benefits\, families are struggling to buy food. Our school-based clinicians report that the most common worry among children this year has been having enough food. \nWJCS opened a food pantry in Yonkers in July in response to our clients’ needs. The pantry distributes bags of fresh produce and nonperishable items to over 250 families on the second Tuesday of every month. We need to do more. We need your help. \nPlease join us on Monday\, January 19 to collect bags of nonperishable food for our community. We will be holding 2 volunteer shifts so that we can accommodate everyone who wants to volunteer and make as many care packages as possible to help families in need. We will also be decorating teddy bears for the children of the families who use the food pantry. \nThe registration fee for each child is $20. We also encourage you to purchase food items from our Amazon Wishlist to be sent to us ahead of the event. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW\nTeen Leadership\nAdolescents\, ages 15-18\, can sign up for a leadership role at the MLK Jr. Day Family Volunteer Event to help with set up\, clean up\, collecting grocery bags\, and guiding the younger children in packing “Warm Hug” care packages and decorating teddy bears. There are two shifts: Shift 1 – 9:30am-12:00pm Shift 2 – 12:30pm-3:00pm There are 10 slots available for each shift. Please only sign up for one shift as we have many teens interested in volunteering! Arrive promptly for your shift to receive your assignment and instructions. You will receive a letter confirming your volunteer hours and duties that you can use for school requirements.\nSIGN UP FOR A TEEN LEADERSHIP ROLE\nQuestions? Please contact Marci Allen\, Volunteer & Event Coordinator\, at mallen@wjcs.com; 914-761-0600 x2207.

SUMMARY:Theories & Practices to Support Clinicians Working with Grieving Clients
DESCRIPTION:FOR WJCS STAFF ONLY\nEnrollment limited to: 30\nContact Hrs: 2\nCEU’s: 2\nGrief is a natural reaction to loss and everyone will experience grief at some point in their lives. Unfortunately\, despite the naturalness of grief\, many people struggle to process their feelings after the loss of a loved one or are impeded in their processing by other barriers. In particular\, COVID-19 and subsequent isolation have both increased the number of individuals experiencing death and grief and decreased access to typical grieving resources like community support and ritual. More and more clinicians are receiving referrals for grieving clients asking for support in their bereavement process. \nThe current course aims to provide clinicians with a grounding in psychoeducation and theory behind grief responses in order to increase clinician confidence in working with clients who are experiencing bereavement. Additionally\, this course will provide clinicians with examples of and hands-on practice with activities they can use in session to help support clients on their journey through grief and healing. At the close of each day of the course\, space will be provided for clinicians to process their thoughts and feelings related to working with grieving clients in an effort to normalize conversation about death and dying and dispel some of the discomfort or concern about supporting grieving clients. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion\, and hands-on activities. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDispel bereavement “myths” that may impede clinicians from working with grieving clients and provide education on current theories of grief\nLearn steps for assessing functioning of grieving clients\nDifferentiate “normal” grieving and Prolonged Grief Disorder\nUnderstand and be able to provide psychoeducation to clients about the concepts of disenfranchised grief\, ambiguous loss\, continuing bonds\, and grief reminders\nLearn about and practice therapeutic modalities and activities to do with grieving clients\nProcess countertransference related to death\, dying\, and grief\n\nInstructor: Tiffany Huseman\, PsyD & Sedef Orsel\, LMSW \nLocation: Live online via Zoom \nCost: No cost to staff \nThis form is currently closed for submissions. \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Worker as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067\, and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. SUMMARY:Trauma Treatment Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 2/3/26 & 2/10/26\nContact Hrs: 4\nCEU’s:  4\nEnrollment Limited to:  20 \nClinicians are likely to encounter survivors of trauma in their practice. In addition to clients who meet criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders from single traumatic events\, survivors of complex and early developmental attachment trauma may also present more complex clinical pictures. This course will address diagnostic criteria for PTSD and approaches to assessment of traumatic stress-related disorders\, and will introduce participants to several trauma-focused treatments\, increasing participants’ awareness of the predominant evidence-based frameworks and of how to select appropriate treatments. Specifically\, participants will be introduced to the triphasic model of treatment for complex trauma and to several evidenced-based approaches to treatment of traumatic stress-related disorders for both adults and children\, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)\, Prolonged Exposure (PE)\, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). In addition\, the course will address common challenges in treatment of trauma survivors\, including discussion of the impacts on clinicians of working with a traumatized population. Participants will be able to openly discuss cases in their practice to explore and gain practice in integrating trauma-informed and trauma-focused strategies. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the diagnostic criteria for PTSD.\nBecome familiar with screening measures for trauma and stressor-related disorders.\nUnderstand the rationale for trauma-focused treatments and primary mechanisms of change across treatments.\nBecome familiar with common trauma therapies for children and adults\, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)\, Prolonged Exposure (PE)\, and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT).\nIncrease awareness about common barriers in trauma treatment\, as well as how to address them\, and about impacts on clinicians related to working with traumatized populations.\n\nInstructor: Hanna Cohen\, Psy.D. & Olivia Gerringer\, MS\nLocation: Zoom\nCost for non-WJCS staff: $150 \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067 and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. SUMMARY:Client Alliance\, Compliance & Therapist Burn Out
DESCRIPTION:Enrollment Limited to: 20\nContact Hours: 2\nCEU’s: 2\nMental health professionals\, perhaps now more than ever\, are susceptible to stress and burn out directly related to their job responsibilities. Part of this comes from defining our professional selves based on what we are told our roles should be and what we should be able to accomplish rather than a realistic appraisal of situations and settings. In addition\, we buy into the construct of the “ideal psychotherapy client” and negatively assess the quality of our work when that dynamic does not emerge. To understand how this could be impacting a clinician’s work\, we will evaluate the constructs of the therapeutic alliance and client compliance and the level of burn out that a clinician might report experiencing. The course will allow for participants to review their own caseloads in relation to these constructs in order to assess how vulnerable to burn out we might be. The course will suggest ways that clinicians can think about the challenges of their work differently in order to potentially decrease the burn out we experience. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion\, and video clips \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will be able to assess their own clients via a model of therapeutic alliance and compliance and describe how one client’s relationship with them and progress in the work relates to this model.\nParticipants will identify one way of thinking about a client or their work in general that could potentially add to their own burn out.\nParticipants will be able to assess their overall case loads at this time via this model and identify where the vulnerability for burn out might exist for them at this time.\n\nCost for non-WJCS staff: $100 \nInstructor: Kenn Mann\, Psy.D. \nLocation: Zoom \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067\, and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313.  \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. The participants will have an opportunity to consider how they can sensitively integrate this perspective into their work with these clients. \nMethod:  Lecture\, discussion\, and video clips \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will be able to identify the current diagnostic trends with ASD and its implication for treatment planning.\nParticipants will be able to explain two contemporary advances in understanding the etiology of ASD.\nParticipants will be able to describe a common differential diagnosis with these clients and explain how to move toward making an accurate assessment of the client.\nAfter considering the range of modifications that can be made in therapeutic interventions with these clients\, participants will be able to identify an adaptation that they could employ or that they have recently used that illustrates these principles.\nParticipants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the construct of intersectionality as it relates to this population and consider how this might influence their work with these clients.\n\nInstructor:  Kenn Mann\, Psy.D. \nLocation:  Live Via Zoom \nCost: $150 for non-WJCS staff \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067 and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class.
