SUMMARY:Family Volunteer Event: Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, January 19\, 2026\, in celebration of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, WJCS is hosting a Family Volunteer Event. We are inviting families with children of all ages to participate in collecting nonperishable food items and packing “Winter Hug” care packages with soup\, cocoa\, hats\, and mittens for the Westchester community.  This is a great opportunity for families to bond and teach children the values of volunteerism and helping others. \nOur Westchester families need our help now more than ever. With the rising cost of EVERYTHING and the reduction in support and benefits\, families are struggling to buy food. Our school-based clinicians report that the most common worry among children this year has been having enough food. \nWJCS opened a food pantry in Yonkers in July in response to our clients’ needs. The pantry distributes bags of fresh produce and nonperishable items to over 250 families on the second Tuesday of every month. We need to do more. We need your help. \nPlease join us on Monday\, January 19 to collect bags of nonperishable food for our community. We will be holding 2 volunteer shifts so that we can accommodate everyone who wants to volunteer and make as many care packages as possible to help families in need. We will also be decorating teddy bears for the children of the families who use the food pantry. \nThe registration fee for each child is $20. We also encourage you to purchase food items from our Amazon Wishlist to be sent to us ahead of the event. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW\nTeen Leadership\nAdolescents\, ages 15-18\, can sign up for a leadership role at the MLK Jr. Day Family Volunteer Event to help with set up\, clean up\, collecting grocery bags\, and guiding the younger children in packing “Warm Hug” care packages and decorating teddy bears. There are two shifts: Shift 1 – 9:30am-12:00pm Shift 2 – 12:30pm-3:00pm There are 10 slots available for each shift. In this two-part course\, clinicians will learn how to engage in difficult conversations with their clients. The first session will cover general background on client- and therapist-interfering thoughts and behaviors that get in the way of approaching difficult conversations. There is well-established research evidence that individuals with developmental disabilities are up to 3 times more likely to experience a traumatic event in their life compared to typically developing peers (Hibbard & Desch\, 2007; Reiter et al.\, 2007). Yet\, many mental health professionals who work in specialty clinics dedicated to the treatment of either trauma or developmental disabilities often receive little to no training on working with clients with comorbid presentations – namely\, clients who present with both a history of trauma and one or more developmental disabilities. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is an empirically validated brief psychotherapy with evidence of long-term improvements in sleep for people with and without psychiatric comorbidities. CBTi addresses behavioral components to sleep (e.g. stimulus control\, sleep restriction therapy)\, cognitive components (beliefs about sleep and sleep related anxiety)\, and physiological components (reducing hyperarousal). Can you barter with clients for your services? Mental health professionals are charged with the legal and ethical responsibility to maintain professional boundaries\, but the obligation isn’t always so easy to discern. This course brings real-world context to ethical concerns often experienced by professionals in practice in maintaining appropriate professional boundaries\, including telehealth and social media domains. This course will provide a framework to contemplate ethical dilemmas and make informed decisions that insulate professionals from legal liability while protecting clients from harm. DESCRIPTION:Contact Hrs: 1.5                             CEU’s: 1.5\nEnrollment Limited to: No limit \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion. \nDescription: A groundbreaking study by the CDC and Keiser Permanente in 1995 revealed the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences\, or ACES\, and their impact on long term health. Risk factors such as ACES are not however predictive factors\, because there are protective factors that can lower the risk of exposure to ACES as well as serve as a buffer against their impact on health and wellbeing. The Center for the Study of Social Policy developed the Strengthening Families and Protective Factors Framework that outlines five interrelated protective (and promotive) factors. Studies show that each of these five factors are related to a decreased likelihood of child abuse and neglect\, as well as to the promotion of family strengths and optimal child development\, and they are: \n\nParental Resilience\nSocial Connections\nKnowledge of Parenting and Child Development\nConcrete Support in Times of Need\nSocial and Emotional Competence of Children.\n\nThis training will seek to inform participants about the major findings of the ACES study\, the theoretical foundations for the Protective Factors Framework\, and each of the five protective factors. This training will provide an overview of these various substances comprising this category of drugs\, their intoxication and withdrawal symptoms\, and co-occurring mental health and physical health concerns. Participants will also gain an understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying stimulant use\, the clinical presentation of stimulant use disorders\, and effective evidence-based treatment approaches to address stimulant use disorders. MI is an approach that attempts to move an individual away from a state of indecision or uncertainty and towards finding the motivation to make positive decisions and accomplish established goals. MI is a directional\, consumer-centered style of interacting with the goal of eliciting behavior change by helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence. Rather than acting antagonistically or combatively\, the helper engages with the consumer to explore his/her feelings\, including ambivalence about changing\, and help clients find their own motivations. This workshop provides participants with an overview of the research and theoretical base for the model. Participants will also practice MI strategies and skills in small groups throughout the day. A working camera and microphone are required for this event. Full and active participation during the entire training is required to receive CEUs. (12 CEUs). SUMMARY:Gambling and Other Behavioral Addictions: What Clinicians Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Date: 11/08/24        Time: 9:30 – 11:00am\nContact Hours/CEU’s: 1.5\nBehavioral addictions include gambling\, sex addiction\, internet gaming disorder\, shopping addiction and food addictions\, however the DSM-5-TR only recognizes gambling and internet gaming addiction within this category. This session will cover a wide swath of these addictions\, distinguishing between compulsive behaviors and behavioral addictions\, reviewing common mechanisms\, and will provide an overview of how to assess for and treat behavioral addictions. This discussion will also include reviewing medications used to treat behavioral addictions. Common co-occurring mental health concerns will be explored as well.
