SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid Training (WJCS Staff Only)
DESCRIPTION:FOR WJCS STAFF ONLY! \nMost of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack—we’d start CPR\, or at the very least\, call 9-1-1. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone having a panic attack or if we were concerned that a friend or co-worker might be showing signs of alcoholism. \nMental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance use disorder. This training for WJCS staff will teach learners how to be a support to colleagues who may be struggling. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP BY JANUARY 16!\nPlease register with your WJCS email address as this event is open to WJCS STAFF ONLY \n*Participants must complete a 2-hour self-guided online pre-work ahead of the live meeting.

SUMMARY:Protective Factors and Promoting Resilience in Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Contact Hrs: 1.5                             CEU’s: 1.5\nEnrollment Limited to: No limit \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion. \nDescription: A groundbreaking study by the CDC and Keiser Permanente in 1995 revealed the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences\, or ACES\, and their impact on long term health. Risk factors such as ACES are not however predictive factors\, because there are protective factors that can lower the risk of exposure to ACES as well as serve as a buffer against their impact on health and wellbeing. The Center for the Study of Social Policy developed the Strengthening Families and Protective Factors Framework that outlines five interrelated protective (and promotive) factors. Studies show that each of these five factors are related to a decreased likelihood of child abuse and neglect\, as well as to the promotion of family strengths and optimal child development\, and they are: \n\nParental Resilience\nSocial Connections\nKnowledge of Parenting and Child Development\nConcrete Support in Times of Need\nSocial and Emotional Competence of Children.\n\nThis training will seek to inform participants about the major findings of the ACES study\, the theoretical foundations for the Protective Factors Framework\, and each of the five protective factors. This course will further address practical strategies to integrate the Protective Factors Framework approach into existing practices\, as well as the use of a screening tool known as the Protective Factors Index\, or PFI. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nRecognize the prevalence and impact of ACES on health outcomes\nUnderstand the theoretical framework for the Strengthening Families Protective Factor Framework approach\nBecome familiar with the five protective factors that counter the effect of exposure to risk factors and ACES\nIdentify ways to implement each of the five Protective Factors in practice\nLearn about the Protective Factors Instrument (PFI) as a screening tool\n\nInstructor: Tally Palefski\, LCSW & Jessica Piecyk\, MPA\, LCSW \nLocation: Zoom \nCost: $75 \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067\, and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. SUMMARY:Complicated Relationships: Case Studies in Boundaries (FOR WJCS STAFF ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:FOR WJCS STAFF ONLY\nEnrollment Limited To: 30\nContact Hrs: 3\nCEUs: 3\nMental Health professionals are more than their professional role. We have personal lives. When those personal lives intertwine with our professional lives\, things get complicated. This training explores dual/multiple relationships by examining case examples from the common to the unlikely\, but still real. Special attention will be paid to considerations for communities where dual/multiple relationships in the provision of mental health care might not be avoidable including rural areas\, religious groups\, LGBTQ+ communities\, and veterans of military service. SUMMARY:Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi)
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 4/15/25 & 4/22/25\nTime: 9:00-11:00am\nContact Hrs: 4\nCEU’s: 4\nEnrollment Limited: 20\nInsomnia is defined as poor sleep that is associated with distress and/or daytime consequences\, including impairment in functioning or mood. Insomnia can lead to poor mental health\, or can be a consequence of poor mental health. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is an empirically validated brief psychotherapy with evidence of long-term improvements in sleep for people with and without psychiatric comorbidities. CBTi addresses behavioral components to sleep (e.g. stimulus control\, sleep restriction therapy)\, cognitive components (beliefs about sleep and sleep related anxiety)\, and physiological components (reducing hyperarousal). In this course\, participants will be introduced to the rationale for CBTi\, learn the tools involved in implementing it\, and become familiar with how to manage common comorbidities and challenges in implementation. \nMethod: Live Online\, Lecture\, discussion. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the sleep cycle and common patterns of normal and disordered sleep.\nUnderstand Spielman’s model and the difference between predisposing\, precipitating and perpetuating factors in insomnia.\nIdentify which clients would be appropriate candidates for CBTi.\nLearn how to teach stimulus control and sleep restriction therapy to clients.\n\nInstructor: Tiffany Huseman\, PsyD\nLocation: Live via Zoom\nCost: $200 \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067 and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. SUMMARY:The Intersection of Trauma & Developmental Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Enrollment Limited To: 20\nContact Hrs: 1.5\nCEUs: 1.5\nIndividuals with developmental disabilities often present to treatment with additional diagnostic statuses. There is well-established research evidence that individuals with developmental disabilities are up to 3 times more likely to experience a traumatic event in their life compared to typically developing peers (Hibbard & Desch\, 2007; Reiter et al.\, 2007). Yet\, many mental health professionals who work in specialty clinics dedicated to the treatment of either trauma or developmental disabilities often receive little to no training on working with clients with comorbid presentations – namely\, clients who present with both a history of trauma and one or more developmental disabilities. In order to enable clinicians to better serve this unique client population\, this course will: provide information on how trauma may present differently in the developmental disability population compared to neurotypicals\, encourage participants to think critically about how traumatic experiences might be experienced through the lens of a person with developmental disabilities\, and identify ways in which current evidence-based interventions for trauma could be adapted for this population of clients. \nSources: Hibbard\, R. A.\, & Desch\, L. W. (2007). Maltreatment of children with disabilities. Pediatrics\, 119(5)\, 1018–1025. Reiter\, S.\, Bryen\, D. N.\, & Shachar\, I. (2007). Adolescents with intellectual disabilities as victims of abuse. Journal of Intellectual Disabilities\, 11(4)\, 371–387. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion\, case presentation \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will gain a basic understanding of how trauma symptoms present in clients with developmental disabilities.\nParticipants will gain a better understanding of how trauma may be experienced differently through the lens of a person with developmental disability compared to a neurotypical peer.\nParticipants will identify at least one way in which evidence-based trauma intervention can be adapted for the developmental disability population.\n\nCost: $75 for non-WJCS staff \nInstructor: Minh Cao\, Ph.D. \nLocation: Live via Zoom \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067 and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class.
