DESCRIPTION:Date: 12/2/24 & 12/3/24          Time: 9am-4pm\nContact Hrs: 12                        CEU’s: 12\nStudy after study has reliably demonstrated that implementing this practice with proficiency and consistency will improve behavioral healthcare outcomes for consumers. MI is an approach that attempts to move an individual away from a state of indecision or uncertainty and towards finding the motivation to make positive decisions and accomplish established goals. MI is a directional\, consumer-centered style of interacting with the goal of eliciting behavior change by helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence. Rather than acting antagonistically or combatively\, the helper engages with the consumer to explore his/her feelings\, including ambivalence about changing\, and help clients find their own motivations. This workshop provides participants with an overview of the research and theoretical base for the model. Participants will also practice MI strategies and skills in small groups throughout the day. A working camera and microphone are required for this event. Full and active participation during the entire training is required to receive CEUs. (12 CEUs). Participants are expected to also enroll in the MI Level II training as well\, with different versions of that training for clinicians and supervisors. \nMethod: Lecture\, experiential practice\, discussion. \nLearning Objectives:\n• Understand the research base for MI with a focus on its efficacy with substance use disorders (SUDs) including opioids.\n• Understand the foundation spirit and basic strategies of MI to empower individuals to make changes in their lives.\n• Demonstrate basic MI skills and strategies in breakout groups. \nInstructor: Brian Serna MA LPCC LADAC MINT\, Emily Everhart LMHC MINT\nLocation: Zoom \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067\, and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class. SUMMARY:Assessing and Treating Clients with Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Conditions
DESCRIPTION:Dates: 10/1/24\, 10/8/24\, 10/15/24\nTime: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM\nEnrollment Limited To: 20\nContact Hrs: 4.5              CEUs: 4.5\nClients seeking mental health treatment may also have a coexisting substance abuse problem. This may be apparent at intake or emerge during treatment. Symptoms of one disorder are often mistaken for the other. Treatment of individuals who present with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues can present a myriad of challenges for providers. Among the challenges faced by providers treating individuals with co-occurring conditions are: \n\nrecognizing substance use when it is present\ncompleting appropriate assessment of a client’s substance use\nhelping clients recognize the problematic nature of their use for\nthe overall wellbeing\ndetermining what level of care is appropriate for the client\nselecting appropriate interventions to decrease substance use\nhelping clients reduce their risk for slips and relapses in their substance use and cope effectively with them when they occur.\n\nThis training will help providers to be more prepared for the challenges associated with providing treatment to such individuals. Providers will learn how to conduct an assessment of substance use\, how to decide what level of treatment is appropriate for specific individuals\, assess individuals’ readiness for change\, apply evidenced-based approaches to increasing individuals’ motivation for change\, assess the functional purposes and impacts of substance use\, select and utilize appropriate treatments for individuals with co-occurring conditions\, and help individuals reduce the impacts of relapse. \nMethod: Lecture\, discussion\, and role-play. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will understand the theoretical basis for co-occurring treatment\, including stages of change\, functional purposes of substance use\, and complications caused with concurrent substance use and mental health conditions.\nParticipants will learn interventions aimed at increasing motivation to address substance use.\nParticipants will learn to evaluate the functional purposes of substance use and select appropriate interventions to address those purposes.\n\nInstructor: William Mullane\, Ph.D.\nLocation: Live via Zoom\nCost: $200.00 \nWestchester Jewish Community Services is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0101\, and by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0067\, and by The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors. #MHC-0313 \nPlease note: To receive CE credits\, one must attend the entirety of the class.
