Hoarding Disorder: What Clinicians Need to Know

Description: It is estimated that 2%-6% of the population suffers from hoarding disorder. Across two sessions, this course will review the common mechanisms associated with the development of hoarding disorder as well as how to recognize, assess, and treat hoarding disorder. The course will also provide an overview of a newly developed eight-week specialty treatment program for hoarding disorder that can be effectively delivered both in office or via telehealth in standard length psychotherapy sessions. Program materials will be provided. Time for questions will be available after the presentation.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the common mechanism through which hoarding disorder causes a pathological attachment to possessions.
- Understand the diagnostic criteria, demographic statistics and current research related to hoarding disorder.
- Learn effective therapeutic interventions used to treat hoarding disorder, including a new evidence-based eight-week specialty treatment program designed to help clients:
• Identifying decision making barriers.
• Pushing through the distress in discarding.
• Developing skills of time management to break down tasks into manageable periods.
• Resisting continued acquisitions.
• Developing a harm reduction plan of care.
• Identifying supportive resources.
• Developing goals to sustain decluttering efforts.
