One of Our Many Dedicated Volunteers

Published Tuesday, July 21, 2020

While April is known as Volunteer Appreciation Month, at WJCS we feel appreciative and fortunate every day of the year that we have 200 active volunteers eager to further the mission of helping Westchester residents overcome obstacles and lead their best lives. Each volunteer brings his or her own skills, talents, and commitment to WJCS and makes vital contributions to Westchester County. Our volunteers range in background and age and include children and retirees.

Steve Cohn is one of our many volunteers. After he retired from his job in publishing, he became involved in our Volunteer Internship Program (VIP). The VIP Program was established for adults 18 and older who are referred by mental health professionals and wish to partake in and benefit from a volunteer/internship experience. Participants in the VIP program are placed in volunteer positions at non-profits throughout Westchester as well as at WJCS. Applicants go through an intake process to determine an appropriate volunteer placement. Formerly the Editor in Chief of Media Industry News, Steve now applies his excellent writing, research, editing, and speaking skills to his volunteer position at the White Plains Library. Steve writes news articles as well as announcements about author and other guest speaker events for the library newsletter. White Plains librarian Kristen Thornton-DeStafeno says, "I've been working with Steve since 2017 and he does a wonderful job of interviewing subjects and diving into their area of interests. The posts he writes for the library are much more than just promotional, thanks to his attention to detail."

We thank Steve for his dedication, time, and efforts to make the Westchester community a better place to live.
