Celebrating Summer: WJCS Wiener Academy kicked off its annual six-week summer academy on July 6th with this year’s theme being “Girl Power: Follow Your Dreams.” While the program will end on August 6th, the campers, ages 9 -13, will long be inspired by their participation in this program.

Prominent women of diverse backgrounds shared their career journeys, interests, hobbies, passions, and advice with the girls, educating them and sparking them to think and ask questions about jobs, entrepreneurship, government, and much more. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democratic Leader of the New York State Senate; Kym McNair, Coordinator for Community Education and Communication at My Sister's Place; and Sherry Wiener, Developer of Educational Programs at WJCS, were among the many guest speakers.

Campers engaged in various age-appropriate workshops, focusing on health and fitness, robotics, organizational skills, career exploration, financial literacy, and personal goals. By cutting out words and photos from magazines, the girls created vision boards that highlight their hopes and dreams for the future. (Check out the video below.) A field trip to the movies, bowling at Bowlmor Lanes in White Plains, and a visit to Rye Playland added to the fun. Ebony Carelock, WJCS Program Director for Youth Development, notes that the program has been enriched by its relationship with Arts of Westchester, improvisational theatrical talent from Sarah Lawrence College, sports opportunities offered by BackyardSports, anti-bullying guidance from Margaret’s Place, and many other organizations in Westchester County.

As the girls come and go at the start and end of the day, they walk through a gallery Ebony created in the hallway with photos of Amelia Earhart, Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Oprah, and other powerful, high-achieving women. The message is clear: You, too, can fulfill your dreams.
