Mary J. Blige Center for Women
Enhancing the academic, personal and parenting skills of women and girls
The Mary J. Blige Center for Women, a partnership between WJCS and FFAWN, is committed to providing girls and women with skills, knowledge, resources and supports that will empower them to pursue their personal goals and become self-sufficient, confident women.
Located in Yonkers, components of the Center include:
A DIFFERENT START (Providing a change in direction...a new beginning) Helping low income pregnant and parenting young women (ages 16-21) to achieve more independence and productivity through education, including exploring career choices, parenting skills, paid internships, volunteer work, life skills training and GED classes.
LEGACY (Creating and passing on values that last forever)
Dedicated to promoting empowerment through teaching principals of success in careers, family life, relationships, health and money management for women ages 22 and up. Women seek and share advice in our sister-to-sister support groups that address the unique issues they face. Participants are encouraged to practice behaviors that promote life-long traditions.
MY LIFE PROJECT (The power to control my future rests with me)
Inspires and prepares young girls (7-12th grades) to succeed in the real world by teaching decision-making and problem-solving skills that build self-confidence and self-esteem. Girls attend workshops that deal with peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, relationship abuse/violence, sexual activity, college and career planning and more. Girls open their minds to their full potential,
PATRICE'S CLOSET (Clothes can lift our spirits and confidence. But if we are hounded by feelings of insecurity, it's our inside that needs attention. Let's work on the heart, mind and soul beneath them so you can get the job!)
