FOR CHILDREN: In-School and After-School Supports
Many youngsters with learning problems fall behind in school because their disabilities go undetected or they cannot learn by traditional teaching methods. The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Learning Center programs help school-age children in many different areas: reading, writing, math, organizational and study skills.
Psycho-educational specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers work cooperatively to provide assessment, individualized remediation, counseling and coordinated planning with schools. Services also are offered to children in many of WJCS' special community-based programs. These services include programs for homeless children at Woodside and Hillcrest Elementary Schools in Peekskill and early intervention and Family Reading Programs at the MLK School in Yonkers.
The Learning Center is on the New York State list of approved supplemental Educational Service Providers and has successfully provided service to children and adolescents in failing schools in Yonkers.
Testing, Assessment and Evaluation includes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) for individuals suspected of having autism or other pervasive developmental disorders.
Well over 20,000 adults with literacy issues suffer from the anxiety, embarrassment and lack of opportunity associated with serious reading and writing deficits. WJCS offers individual and small group instruction, psycho-educational evaluations, individualized remediation in small groups and the opportunity for additional psychological services. This innovative approach is distinct from traditional learning programs and has enabled many individuals to experience success, earn high-school equivalency degrees and pursue higher education.
