Building Better Beginnings – Early Step Forward
An early childhood mental health project in Yonkers
Building Better Beginnings (BBB) is a mental health consultation program that provides assessment and psycho-social support to pre-school children, parents, and day care centers to support children’s healthy emotional development. The key component of the BBB program is training day care staff in "Second Step," a proven national model that emphasizes emotional regulation and social skills development, and violence prevention. Our staff works with parents and trains, supports, and consults with early childhood professionals, enabling them to manage children at home or at school who experience social, emotional, or behavioral challenges. Young children identified as struggling with serious behavioral and emotional challenges and their families receive services ranging from office-based child-parent psychotherapy to on-site counseling, community referrals, and parent-training workshops.
Parents from the community, who may not have their children in a participating Head Start or day care program, also are invited to meet with professionals at the Mary J. Blige Center to take advantage of these support services.
A program brochure in English and Spanish is available.
