GLMA is circulating a petition for health care
providers in opposition to a proposed law in Michigan that
could permit health care providers to discriminate against
LGBT people. 40 local and national organizations have
signed, as have 500 individuals representing 47 states, Canada
and Guam. The petition will be presented to the Governor
of Michigan and to the Michigan Senate.
As we celebrate great
victories in the courts -- the US Supreme Court decision on
the Texas sodomy statute and the Massachusetts Supreme Court
decision on same sex marriage -- LGBT health care faces new
threats in Congress and from the Bush Administration, most
notably efforts to censor LGBT and HIV research, harassing
audits, and "hit lists" generated by the likes of the
Traditional Values Coalition.
GLMA provides a voice for
health care professionals in the fight for equality. Other
LGBT organizations comment on health care. We ARE health
care! And we need to remain strong for the fight ahead.
