The Day of Silence, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in collaboration with the United States Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies.

The Day of Silence takes place April 21, 2004. Don't wait! register online!

Do you want to make a difference?

The GLSEN Jump-Start 2004-2005 National Student Leadership Team (NSLT) will consist of 100 middle and high school students who will support student organizing efforts across the country.

Okay, so you're probably asking, what does that mean? Well, you could be supporting students in many different ways. Whether it is helping students starting student clubs, commonly known as gay-straight alliances (GSAs); developing local safe school summit; training teachers; planning Day of Silence, Transgender Day of Rememberance and other days of action; or other safer schools organizing, students on this team will be working with other students to create change in k-12 schools...

What will the students on Jump-Start do?
-- answer emails from other students and allies about safer schools organizing
-- help network and start student clubs in their area
-- co-present or coordinate summits and workshops on safer schools issues in their area
-- connect with other students across the country to work on GLSEN's national projects like Day of Silence, teacher training, summits and other safer schools organizing

Apply today to be part of the solution to making schools safer for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
